Actinic keratosis

Actinic keratosis (AKs) are common skin growths, especially in fair skinned individuals. They look like rough, dry, pink, scaly patches and often feel like sandpaper. They are caused by years of sun exposure and considered precancerous. If left untreated, they may turn into a squamous cell carcinoma.

Treatment options vary from cryosurgery, photodynamic therapy, chemical peels, curettage, topical chemotherapy, topical immunotherapy, and topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory creams. It is vital to protect your skin from the sun and other sources of ultraviolet radiation (i.e. tanning beds) to prevent AKs from developing.
